Placement Exam
Our institution does not require an admissions test to all students, but does require that students take a Mathematics Placement Exam to ensure that they are on the correct level and do not need remedial math to bring them up to par. Would this be considered an admissions exam which must completed as part of the admissions process?
Theodore,
This is very true when it comes to the ability to navigate. We cannot assume every student is technologically savvy to online education. It can become a nightmare!

I agree with this, but would add a short computer assessment especially for, but not limited to, online institutions. If one doesn't know how to get around on their computer, it could make it a lot harder for them to learn and be successful in that program.
ANDREA,
Very true! Our students are going out into the community and need to have those skills.
Patty Aronoff
I would agree picking the correct placement program would be very appropriate. But no matter what english and math should never change, because you need those courses, to show your speaking skills and math for problem solving.
Melissa,
The tests are set to set the standard for what is to come. If students are not passing the tests, they need to study and work harder. The rigors are well worth the effort.

As I understand it, the nursing program HESI tests are VERY math heavy. Other than doseage knowledge why is there so much emphasis on the math/physics portion? Prospective nursing students have asked this question and I'm not sure how to explain the reasoning behind this as math seems to be a repeat issue in regards to test scores. Additionally, there are quite a bit of anatomy questions. I have reviewed some of the study guides on line and the questions seem to run along the lines of what someone would be taught in the nursing program but wouldn't actually ENTER the program with such in depth knowledge.
Tammy,
It is very important to have the right testing for the program offered. The test determines the levels required to be successful in the program.

Tammy,
Every school needs to determine the appropriate entrance tests for the programs they offer.

I feel that a Math and English Placement test are adequate. First you have to communicate with your patients and second Pharmacology and administering the correct dosage is of much concern.
Our Institution accepts the Tabe scores if they are within a year, however I feel that those are to simple for the actual field they are going into Nursing, not challenging enough. I feel they all should take a Pre-Entrance Exam with Science, Spelling, English and Math to a degree of what they are going to be handling, like not basic math but more calculations into Nursing.
Olga,
Make sure this is outlined in the catalog and if minimum requirements are established for admissions, the cut scores are listed.

Our institution use the TEAS V. Which has reading, math, science, and another subject. I find it to be useful for admissions process for medical programs.
Tzipora,
Schools select their entrance requirements. The Commission reviews them and once approved, becomes yours. Not all schools have the same admissions requirement.
