Financial Aid

Are admissions representatives allowed to speak with students about financial aid?

Gloria,
Financial aid is so complex, it is just best left to the experts. So many options are available and the conversation must be individualized to fit their unique situation.

I agree that all FA questions should be answered by that department so that the person inquiring is not given misleading information. I make sure that perspective students (inquiries) have a name and contact number of a FA representative.

Jennifer,
The whole process of financial aid is very complicated and should be completed with the student by a subject matter expert.

Admissions Representatives do not specialize in finical aid therefore are not allowed to speak or answer questions about the finical aid process with students or potential students.

Yes, I agree. We have all of our Admissions rep complete the free online tutorial for Title IV so they have some basic accurate information to offer to prospective students. This seems to work out well

Irene,
Yes, but be careful in information that you provide. Sometimes they hear one thing and stick with it from that point forward. Make sure they understand that the details will come from FA.

Even though Financial Aid should be the one handling all inquiries and details; admission should at least know and inform the prospective student the different options so the student have an idea before speaking with Financial advisor.

Norlan ,

It is a best practice to let financial aid handle the inquiries and details. They are the experts.

Marsha,

Depends upon the management of your school. Best practices would refer the prospective student to the financial aid department who are the subject matter experts.

Patty Aronoff

Admissions does not speak about financial aid, that is why there is a financial aid dept.
