Darlene,
Every student is important and listening is part of the discovery.

listening is always key and it should be that way in every school with every admission officer. it shows prospective we truly care and are dedicated to there well being

I agree - listening is essential! That is the best way to find out what the psopet's needs are, and if you can possibly fulfill their needs. Meeting their needs is good for them, good for me, and good for the instiution!

I agree. The only way to fully answer a question is to understand the question.

Zyria,
We all want people to listen to what we have to say and believe what we say is important to devote their attention.

I agree with that statement. Listening to the student can also save time because the student might answer questions that you might ask them if you weren't listening to them.

Douglas,
Listening helps us communicate better. When we focus on what thee student is saying, we can respond better.

We had a student come in and register and was enthusiasic about the school and the program, made all A's and then disclosed at graduation that she apparently was pressured by her husband. She had no intentions of persuing her career, she was interested in starting a family. I dont think I could have listened any closer. This was also a happy student that was sucessful at learning this trade. Sometimes you can listen but they do not devulge personal information.

Students know when they have been heard! It's a joy to connect through the skill of listening.

I agree with you in regards to how important it is to listen to the student. When you show that you are listening, the individual will be able to see that you care about what he or she is saying. People want to be heard in general.

Listening is key, I agree! I actually do that with students ask the question in a differnt way to make sure that the student understood me and the question. And, if not I explain in a different way to the student. I can say that my communication skills have improved too.

I believe that listening to the student is vital to assuring the the degree program will be a good fit and useful for the student.

Katherine,
Good advice, repeating back is the best way to make sure everyone understands.

Matthew,
Online institutions have different dynamics than face-to-face contact. You do not have the benefits of non-verbal cues to draw from.

Ania,
It is making sure they have the right information to make a decision.

Carmen,
By summarizing their responses, you are verifying their thoughts and causing them to reflect on what they said to you.

By saying to the the student, "So what you are saying is...". the prospective students will know you care and that you are listening. If you didn't understand what they were saying, they can correct you. Everyone is on the same page!!!

Yes as a person who works at an online institutino we really need to make sure we listen for student cues. We will continue to follow the rules put forward with the CIE. I will keep this notebook not only at my desk but i will print out and surround myself with the material so i continue to provide the quality of service that the state of florida requires.

I take the time to listen and write good notes so I can repeat back to them and inforce what it was that they stated to me. I also think it's important to ask them in their own words why they think they are motivated enough to go back to school. So this is why I think so but in your own words why do you think you are motivated?

I agree. I feel if you dont listen you may put them in a program where they will not do well.
