Salary, fee and catalog information

Many students come to our school hoping to change careers to obtain a better job. They often ask for job outlook and salary expectations. It's ok to increase slightly the amount of salary they're expected to earn. The truth is they will be making more than their current salary. Plus with continuing education the salary increases.

We always give them a catalog and enrollment information before they register for classes. It's important they read about the classes they're taking and know the fees they're paying.

Gloria,

Our instructors can be awesome as resources but they, too, need to be trained on what can and cannot be said (e.g. Salary promises.)

In some cases our adjunct faculty are working in the profession and with faculty permission I have referred potential student to them, they can be/are a good source of information. I have also referred potential students to the professions website for salary and job opportunities.

sandra,
Correct! We tread on dangerous ground when we start discussing salaries. It is best to guide them to valid resources and to do the research themselves.

Patty Aronoff

We let the students know that we cannot accurately give them a salary range for when they graduate because it all depends on various factors but we encourage them to research online at websites such as bls.gov

Susan,
Salaries cannot be guaranteed except for minimum wage. Employers will pay according to their own business.

Patty Aronoff

I would refer students to our career management center. The CMC can give students salary ranges for possible positions, but no salary change can be guaranteed.

Dagmara,
We should give them the tools to discover their own earning potential. Misquoting or misleading salary information is against Fair Consumer Practices.
