Patty thank you for the comments. What i have found is that we buld trust when we are more knowledgeable about our own process. Students come to us for direction, I like when a student is willing to talk or share their goals. This allows for an advisor or representative to lend the right support, recommendations, and direction.

I would let them talk. That shows that there is much on their mind and they feel comfortable in speaking with you. You risk losing your credibility if you cut them off.

What do you recommend doing if an open ended question elicits an extremely long and drawn out response from a potential student? What's the best way to cut things down a little bit? - Megan

Active communication will deliver the right answers. Open-ended questions provides an opportunity for the student to relay more information about themselves. Active listening means we catch those information tidbits and put it to good use.
