Transferring of credits
In always have students who dont understand the transferring of credits deal. They become irrate and assume its all transferable. What do I do?
Yes, I agree. Students not only need to rely on us, but they need to be empowered to fully understand the process of accepting and transfering credits. We tell all our students, that all credits being transferred and up to the receiving school as to whether or not they will be accepted. We also tell them, that a safe assumption would be that credits would not transfer to another institition other than ours.
Jennie,
It is easy to explain but hard to take the realities of it. So many just "assume" and then the reality check hits.

Mike,
Well stated! It s finding the right fit for the student and the school..

Abigail,
They are getting upset because they don't want to accept the reality of it all. They should never assume.

ashley,
Not really, it is what it s. many schools do not accept any transfer credits. This does not mean anything negative for the school.

I believe that it should be made clear after you have determined what their career goals are. This is because if you have a program that fits into their plan and you are clear about all policies this should not be a problem. A good representative would want to only enroll students that will complete a program and graduate. One other point is even though our credits may or may not transfer, if the student relocates out of state where we probably have another location, the student can start at the new location and not worry about paying out of state tuition which can be double in the state college systems.
I try to explain to the student that the transferability of credits is at the discretion of the receiving institute and there are factors that I won't know about because I do not work for the other institution. I have a real life example where I transferred from one regionally accredited university to another (in the same state) and lost 9 credits because the credits weren't credits offered at the other school. I also explain that the university where he or she is enrolling is the one putting their name on the diploma and want to make sure that the sutdents have met our rigorous standards. The students usually understand.
At my institution there is no transferring of credits in or out. I am brand new to this and have not had to experience the frustration yet. Any advice on how to handle this?
