Life Experience used as Credit

I have worked at an institution where the responsibility of administering credit for life experience was that of the admissions counselor because it was looked at as transfer credit. Now that was more than 10 years ago when the concept was fairly new, has their be a standard measure in which to apply life experience?

Catherine,
Interesting! Life credit should be equivalent to the education that they would receive.

At my institution, many of our students are in the military. We start with their resume, then look at their transcripts--for instance the CCAF (Community College of the Air Force). Military students often have TONS of life experience that should be counted.

stephen,
There is much controversy surrounding life credits. The question remains does it truly equal the academic study?

I have worked at an institution where students could use life credit, but it was a very difficult process and i have personally only seen it get approved twice. They have to not only prove that they have the knowledge, they have to take and pass an exam, and bring in the necessary documentation.

Audrey,
It is not overwhelmingly practiced. Your school would have to set criteria for the exchange.

Ursule,
The popular consensus is still undecided. For some, life experience can never replace academia.

I have also never heard of using life experience as credit.

Does anyone have any ideas of how many schools accept life experience as transfer credit? I'm also interested in what types of life events qualify as credit. Is it along the lines of work or military experience?

I never knew that Life Experience could be used as credit; actually, I think that is very good for a prospect student!

Michael,
The standard is up to the institution. The evaluation should replicate the knowledge learned through the courses.
