transfer of credits
it important to know if your institution accept credits from other college.
We also need to let students know that transfer of credits is up to receiving institution
Joseph ,
Misleading the student is against the law. We need to provide them the information they need so they can make a well-informed decision.
Patty Aronoff
It is imperative not to mislead a prospective student on if they can or cannot transfer credits to another institution. I always ask what their long term goal is and which institution they are considering transferring to and say make sure you find out if they will accept credits from another institution.
Arlin,
That is an unfortunate thought. Students should never assume and take the time to investigate.
Patty Aronoff
sometime students believe that because an institution is accredited you can automatically transfer credit to another institution that are accredited. We usually tell the students that is not necessarily the case because each institution have their own rules and regulation to accept transfer credits.
LaShon,
Some schools have the policy that they will not accept any credits once the students start classes. In that case, time is of the essence in getting the required materials for academic review.
Patty Aronoff
I always inform students that they should provide a transcript that will be evaluated by academics- i do advise student to provide transcripts as early as possible in the process - advising student who are concerned to provide a unoffical transcript during the admissions process, with that said I always inform the student that the official transcripts must be submitted to the academics department and that they make the decision as to what credits will be accepted to their program. With student that are concerned with their transfer credits, it's always best to gather as much information as early in the process as possible so that they can recieve a timely and accurate response from the academics department.
Heather,
There should be a process at your school for determining the transferability of credits which would include an official transcript and catalog from the school where the credits were earned.
Patty Aronoff
Teah,
The decision is one that is never made at admissions.
Patty Aronoff
It is very important to be up tom date about transfer of credits. Knowing about life experience credits and articulation agreement so when discussing these topics you can confidently refer to them.
Alot of students want to know if credits earned from a previous instituion will be transferred. It's so important to stay compliant here; must not say "oh yeah, that math credit will transfer." No! That decision is up to registrar.
I agree LoriAnn that it is very important that the student know that if he or she decides to transfer from Itt that it is completely at the receiving institutions discretion on whether they want to accept the credits or not.
Shayla ,
You are correct! Pointing the student to the catalog is a great approach!
Patty Aronoff
Ericka,
You are exactly right! Many students just make an assumption on the transfer of credits and are often disappointed. Each case is an individual review.
Patty Aronoff
Catalina,
Make sure you refer to your catalog for specific details. Since the acceptance of transfer credits is determined by the receiving institutions, there may be specific requirements for your institution. Most generally it is through a review of an official transcript accompanyed by the institution catalog.
Patty Aronoff
I direct students to the catalog so that will be able to see the rule for accepts of credits to our college. Then I tell students that they have to provide an official transcript to our register's office before decisions will be made about tranferability of credit. When students ask will their credits transfer from our college to another I always tell students to speak with the recieving institution before making decisions. Contact their register's office.
I believe that when it comes to informing a student on transfer credits. I simply let them them know that they would have to have the other institution send us an official transcript so that we could have it evaluated but, of course there is no guarentee on how many if any will transfer. When it comes to another institution I simply let the student know that I can not speak on behalf of another institution and that it would be their responsibility to contact the recieving institution as to what there requirements are.
it is important because we can advise students to submit their transcript credits to have them evaluate before providing the information if they can be transfer. there are some institutions that their credits can not be transfer and the student should be notified.
LoriAnn,
It is stated in the catalog and the student must request the review.
Patty Aronoff
Michael,
It will specifically be stated in your catalog that it is the responsibility of the student to seek information on the transfer of credits.
