New to admissions
I am new to the field of admissions. I have worked previously at larger universities in continuing education. Any words of advice as I start the next chapter of my career?
I have worked only a short time for a career college in admissions, and it is tough! However, with the right tools, I think it's a great place to grow and learn. I think the most important thing is to stay on top of policies and procedures, as well as know your school's programs! Also know the features of your school so you can make the tour and information you give to students applicable to their personal needs and goals.
Admissions can be a tough career field! Especially for a small private career college. Always stay up to date on any new information and policies for your school. Also, learn everything you can about your program and college. It is also a good idea to get to know your current students prior to meeting with new prospective students. Prospects generally respond to a knowledgeable and fun individual that they find a commonality with. Good luck in your new career!
I'm also new to admissions. My background is in tutoring. I'm hoping that some of the skills I've developed from one-on-one tutoring will translate to my new career in admissions. I think it will be very important to learn as much as you possibly can about your school and its programs. Students will respond to a knowledgeable person. I also really like the idea of the reference notebook. It will be a good resource for those questions you can't answer off the top of your head.
The best thing to do is keep an organized folder with information to reference. Never be misleading and build positive relationships with students. There is always more to learn each year, and it is crucial to keep up with any and all changes in admissions.
I too am new to admissions and am coming from working at a very large university. My advice, Patrick, is that although we know how a university operates from our first-hand experiences, we should not blindly assume things in our current admissions position. Learn afresh, for every university and college is different and an assumption may become a costly mistake.
