Know your school and different departments
It is very essential to know your school and all the different departments your school has to offer. You want to leave a potential student feeling that they are excited about enrolling. So it is best to stay knowledgeable of all the different careers associated with the different programs.
Part of my New Hire training was to meet with all of the department chairs and program directors to understand their role and the impact they have on the lives of the student. By doing this my first week, I was able to better communicate different student issues with the right person on the first try. If you do not at least know the roles and impact that the different departments have on the students then you are lacking a major part of your job as admissions rep.
Since we are often the first point of contact for the students we should be prepared to answer and questions they have and that includes understanding other departments.
I find it a joy to keep up with the different offerings and content of each degree plan offered. When I am telling a prospective student about what we offer and they have a question about what it includes and content, I don't always have to flip through the catalog while saying nothing. I know it and I still show them where the content is discussed for their review.
I agree that knowing your college and other departments is the key to making the student feel comfortable. If you are confident in your college then the student will be as well.
Taking the initiative to speak with other departments in your school and what they do is critical.
I agree, knowing all you can about each of the departments and what their benefits are really is a plus for both the agent and the prospective student. It gives the agent more confidence and the student precise and clear information. The student is making very important decisions about their future. It is important we are able to assist them with all the information they need to do that. Our training consists of meeting with each department director and shadowing instructors to learn specifics about each program.
I agree, it is great to meet with all of the departments. We all have to work together so we can provide excellent customer service for perspective and current students so this helps with building teamwork with each other.
This is my first time working in admisssions, I love the fact that part of my training is to meet with all departments. I feel even more confident now that I am able to answer questions for a perspective student and/or parent.
I agree it is very important to know your school and the various departments. The more information you know about what your school and what the departments have to offer, the more beneficial it will be for your prospective and current students. I also like to know the people in each department. For example, if I have a specific question about career placement, I can ask someone in that department my question.
I'm new to admissions and I just wanted to share that your comment was very helpful. Thank you.
I couldn't agree more. Reps should do everything they can to make the student feel comfortable and ready to enroll and eventually enter the work field ready to go.
I have found it very helpful to sit down with each department chair to ask questions about what their role is in assisting the student and how we can work together for the benefit of the student.
I agree, knowing your school and the different departments are very important. Students will open up more if they feel you are knowledgeable in what your saying to them, and if you can answer their questions.
I couldnt agree more, it is important to make sure all students are excited but for all the right reasons and not because you mislead them!
Knowing your school and its different departments is key to an admissions reps success. By taking the time to learn about each department, and the different ways the student will be able to utilize them will many times help with the actual enrollment. By knowing what information is important to each student, we can hit on all key points they would need to hear in conjunction with the various departments they have at their disposal.
