One thing that our school has done is we have 3 team members that work with students coming in and then whey they grad. this reminds them of the importance of repayment and what can be done to releive stress if they get behind.
Although, I am not in FA- I can speak on my personal experience going through the exit counseling. I graduated from a state univeristy...the exit process made me feel like a number not a graduate.
I think that it is important that all students be tested before getting into school, why because most of the time the courses taken are so above the education level of most students that once they see that they dont know something they start to not complete the home work and they dont even try to get help they just give up which starts the decline, and default is what happens next.
I think its important to have this information provided to the student. It is also very important to have more that one individual to re-enforce that information to the student about repaying loans. I have find out that a lot of students are not aware that even if the file bankruptcy, they will still have to pay their student loans.
Important to stay in touch with the students and to have all depts involved - strong communication and collaboration between depts and staff essential
Although, I do not work in FA- I can speak on my personal experience going through the exit counseling. There were moments early on where I felt lost and confused about the repayment process. I graduated from a major state univeristy...the exit process literally made me feel like just a number.
Another good means of default prevention is early involvment in communicating with the students. Meet with them throughout their student careers and continue to relay the many repayment options that are available to them upon leaving school.
This is a good idea. Sounds like the 3 could also be a resource and asset for the student to keep them motivated and support them in other needs that may arise.
excellent idea...students need reminded of the importance of repayment and establishing continued good credit by paying off loans
We also have several departments that work together to ensure that students will not default. We have Career Services who assist students with job placement assistance and help with resumes and interviewing skills. Our Student Finance department goes through exit counseling to ensure they understand what they need to do to stay out of default.
Having clear communication with the students upon entering the institution and upon graduation will assist the students with understanding loan repayment significance and their options
Making sure that all prospective students know of the different services that are available to them will promote uniform understanding of the ways they can better prepare to enter and exit school.
We also have several depts such as Student Services, Retention, and Financial Aid that work with the students to ensure that they will not default.
I think its important to have this information provided by more that one individual to re-enforce the fact that student loans must be repayed. Many students are unaware that bankruptcy does not dissolve them of their loans.
We also have several depts that work with the students to ensure that they will not default and if they do they will explain to thenm what the outcome can be.
