Diploma Mills

Why do some traditional schools take diplomas from places where we dont accept diplomas?

I often feel bad for students who get their HS diploma from internet High school usually if too good to be truth it is not a legitimate high school..

I often feel bad for students who get their HS diploma from these types of school most often they have had to pay for a diploma that is useless.

I agree, because diploma mills are horrible. Diploma mills does not offer an education that is earned but a diploma that is not worthy of it title.

I too have had to inform students that we don't accept their high school diploma because it was obtained through a "mill". It is very frustrating for the student because they typically have paid hundreds of dollars to receive it. However, we are a GED testing center so I give them the option that if they are able to take the GED test and pass they still have the option of being accepted. I feel this gives them hope.

It is really sad to see how much money and time is spent on diploma mills. Alot of these people really feel accomplished when they receive a diploma. To be told that a diploma is unacceptable is such a huge let down for those who have worked so hard.

Diploma Mills should be shut down. So many times I have had potential students cry on the phone because they were never told that the diploma they paid for, would not be sufficient to enter college. This is disheartening.
The alternative to shutting down these types of schools would be mandatory full disclosure in all marketing materials and web not only of accreditation, but the definitions of accreditation. Also it would help to have each institution offering a high school diploma post in all marketing materials whether their diploma program would ONLY qualify the potential student for a job and whether the school diploma will grant the potential student the high school equivilance to enter college.
I would love to see the Federal government find a clearcut solution to protect potential students from the dangers of diploma mills.

I think diploma mills require little, if any, academic work in order to earn a degree. Degrees from diploma mills i Believe are sometimes based on life experience alone or a level of academic work that is far below what an accredited postsecondary institution would require. Diploma mills can require little or no work but the result is the same, a degree that has no value and is meaningless.

kamaar,

If you are referring to high school diplomas, each school is responsible for assuring that a student has a valid high school diploma. If a school accepts enrollment from a student without a valid high school diploma, the school may be required to refund any finacial aid money it has received on behalf of that student.

I really believe that our government show do more to shutdown diploma mills. It really makes me feel bad for some that have gone that route with not enough information to know better.
