talkin to someone that close mind

how can you communicate with someone that dont open up to you no matter what you said to them

Monique, that's a great response. Thanks for sharing this.

Hi, Yolanda:-), I would begin by letting them know that you honor their privacy, and that you simply want to do the very best job that you can to give them the information that is best suited to their interests, time and resources. People are inundated with sales, and don't want to be "sold." Perhaps they have just been on the phone with other respresentatives also asking many probing quetions. Show them that you respect them and they may open up.

Great Question Yolanda. I run into this barrier frequently - it can be difficult getting across the long-term rewards of going back to school and that taking the leap into school will have positive results.

I find talking about previous students I have had in their situation and where they are today helps, or having them speak with a student. Helps paint a picture of what can be and also that it is possible.

Any other feedback off this would be welcomed!

That's an interesting point Martha. Eventually, your students or others have to decide for themselves. And as much as we would like them to see our side, it may not happen that way. But being equipped with the right information and resources is important when having the conversation with them.

Sometimes you just have to present the evidence, and let the person see it for them selves, bacause no matter what you say, he/she will not listen.

Well said, Virginia. Ultimately, people have to make up their own minds and as much as we'd like to convince others of our side, sometimes it just doesn't happen. Having information and sources available is important in helping students make their own decisions.

I generally don't waste my time trying to convince them. I try to present a well rounded argument with back up reference information so they see I'm not making it up. Then I just let them make up their own mind. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink.
