Relating and Communicating a Topic your not familar with

When talking to someone what's the best way to relate to a topic that your unfamilar with?

Being honest and letting the person know when you're unsure can also help to build rapport. Thank you for posting.

Actually the answer you provided helps me out for not only the school and the program but for personal matters towards the student as well. But the technique I have used has been asking the question, "Explain to me more about the subject? Because I am not familar with it." Thanks for the advice.

That's a great question Zach. I'm curious, is the topic related to your school or program, or something personal for the student? If it's the first, I recommend finding someone at that moment who can help you to communicate effectively about the attribute or benefit your school has to offer. If however, you're trying to relate to a topic of a more personal nature I would rely on asking questions to seek understanding. There is something very powerful in saying "Tell me more about that" or "I'm not familiar with that, what can you tell me about it?" If you have taken the time to build rapport with the other person, you should be able to comfortably ask questions to seek understanding. What are some techniques you have used when in this situation?
