Modeling body language
Do you fell that it would be more important to model body language and use mirroring as a backup plan with a student?
When I am speaking to a student I default to an open, positive approach, no matter how I am feeling about other things in the day. If you start there, the student has a tendency to mirror you as well and it helps to bring an instant. positive feel to the conversation before it begins. From there, you can see what the body language is of the student as the conversation progresses and adjust accordingly.

That's a great question James. The goal is to bond with the student and it may depend on the student and your comfortablity with each process.
