How to keep the communication on track if deviated from the main goal?

This is really very important since so many people are in non focus mode they start to take you away from the main goal of your communication, (time waster).

In some ways I tell the student was the purpose of the appointment. The main reason to see guidance in the academic department is to make sure we are going to discuss how he/she will meet their goal by time management to meet their needs. Once I have the student involved and how they are going to do it my work is done. I use all the tools, documents, program study and other resource so they don't leave empty handed or forget. It is kind here is the map, I give you the tools and how to meet your goal. The student end up answering all the questions because sometimes they don't know how to start. That's why they go in to circle with their communication.
