Just starting
Currently we do not have any publicity in place since we aren't officially open. Yet, we don't really know where to begin or how to reach out. This at least gave an idea of where to start.
Jonathan,
We totally agree that community outreach is what it is all about. Create and maintain relationships with employers, potential employers, externship sites and more. The more you talk with the community the more you learn about how effective your training is viewed. Then you can make changes based on the needs articulated and seen. We think one person should be hired for Community Outreach. In fact, that employee shouldn't even have an office because their results is gotten in the field. Thanks, Susan

Jamie-
When we started our ADN program two years ago I began building relationships with longterm, acute care, and clinics (any place that was directly involved with our lead demographic). These relationships have grown to be invaluable and we are now receiving more benefit then we give. I know it can seem overwhelming at first, but once you identify your target it gets easier.
anthony,
Good points and you recognize the challenges. Publicity does depend in part on where you live and the publications. It also depends on relationships you build with the local media and the value of your stories. Other ways to gain publicity is sending info about events to the calendar sections of your newspapers. That gets your name out. Also connect with your successful alumni. Look for the ones who have succeeded in the community. Feature them, give them awards, and plan other activities that are worth a story or press before, during, and after. Alumni can be your best source of free publicity. If they are happy and successful they will probably tell their friends, family, and employers about why your institution as a source for training and staffing. It takes a creative outlook to see ways to get free press. Good luck, Susan

When we first started, we tried to get a press release in our local paper. We are not in a huge city, so maybe it was easier here. I just emailed the local business columnist and we were featured twice. Great pub and free too.
Jamie,
Good timing. If you are not yet open you can put several publicity plans in place. The first step may be to determine your target market. Who are they? How do you get their attention? List all events, press releases, and more that you can hold so they find out who you are and how your training can improve their lives.
Thanks, Susan
