Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Do you believe that a student with PTSD (from for instance being in the military and serving in Iraq) should be deemed a disability and thereby acknowledged by accomodations?
Amanda,
I agree. In addition to PTSD, we are seeing an increasing number of returning military men and women with mild traumatic brain injuries which can also present additional learning challenges.

I agree that PTSD should be deemed as a disability. Men and women thta fight for our country can suffer short and long term for the sacrifices that were made. These emotional stressors can cause mnay different issues emotionally which could interfere with a students learning experience.
Gene,
I agree wholeheartedly. Sometimes the individual will need nothing more than encouragement, while sometimes there are specific academic accommodations that may be indicated. Case-by-case is always our mantra.

PTSD is very much a disability, and should be treated as such , but accomodations should be determined on a case by case determination.
Betty,
It helps folks who are living with such problems when they don't have to explain themselves to every new acquaintance. It is important, though, to remember that having the same diagnosis doesn't necessarily mean having the same symptoms or impact.

I agree, I think it is good that it is more documented now.
Kevin,
Agreed. Not all vets have PTSD, and not all PTSD impacts in the same way. But I think the reality of the syndrome has been more than adequately documented over the years.

Being a veteran myself I know many who suffer from PTSD. It is a real disability and should be viewed as such. The effects of PTSD can vary greatly and should be judged on individual basis.
Gina,
I believe that PTSD is a disability and that someone diagnosed with PTSD may be a person with a disability, protected from discrimination. Whether or not they need accommodations is not a matter of the diagnosis, but a matter of the impact of their difficulties.
