Adult ADHD
In the classroom, I do not allow a diagnosis of ADHD to excuse a student from turning in assignments on time. Is this ok? Is it not the responsibility of the student to find assistance and tools to help them cope and deal with the ADHD?
I believe all this is determined by the individual, your teaching methods, and the school. Even with students that do not have disabilities, what is allowed. Once you get to know your students, you will know if they have some type of disability or is just playing around. Students will in turn, know your requirements and will do their best to adhere to them if they are serious. For those that really need extra help, they will seek out someone to attain that help.
In schools I have been associated with students with ADHD may be allowed to turn in assignments late if they have registered with Disability Resources. I never know the discussion they have with Disability Resource Services, I am just informed they have a disability that is required to be accommodated. I am informed that the student may turn in assignments late.
I would not only recommend speaking with your school authorities, but the student's counselor and parents on the best way to assist this student.
Dawn,
It really depends on the direction provided to you by your institution. Remember, just because a group of students share a diagnosis, it may create differing functional limitations. It depends on the documentation that the student provides to support their request. Potentially, this may not be o.k., I recommend speaking with someone at your campus who has insight of your legal obligations.
