Career services in classroom

I believe this is a great way to teach the students how to network. They need to be networking with other students and their instructors. What better way than to intorduce it in the classroom!!

Networking is key. I always tell classes when I speak to them that at least one person in the room will most likely secure an interview through another classmate in the room at one point in time.

Many of our students add that service as an additional course, we have lifetime resume service, a big selling point.

Fernando,
Great idea. You might also want to train every instructor to show students how skills learned in class are applied on the job. Typically instructors also work on the job. They can tell stories every day about how they use their training at work. The more they say then the more relevant training becomes - especially the more challenging parts. Thanks, Susan

I am make it a point to visit each classroom at least once a day to make the students aware of anything having to do with their employability.

Erica,
We also believe that career service training should begin early and be consistent and be offered frequently during the time students are enrolled. Employment skills training can occur in the classroom, on externship sites and more. All faculty and staff have to be trained to talk about employment and how to successfully get a job. You are right - if you wait too long grads will have a problem finding jobs. Many people need a long training period before they enter the job search phase. Thanks, Susan

There is no better way the only thing is to have it mastered by the time they are ready to leave on their own into the work field. So the only advice I have for you Thomas would be the earlier the better. Don't start it so late some students take longer than others to grasp things. Overall you are very true.

Andrea,
Sounds like you offer lots of workshops of interest. What is important is to offer training in all areas of the job search process. Make it fun by inviting grads and employers. Get grads to work one on one with students to really prepare them to seek a job. Thanks, Susan

We use a lot of resources in presenting career services. The ones that the students seem to enjoy the most are: guest speakers, our website set-up workshop, and our earn as you learn program.

Thomas,
Good point. Networking skills can be taught in required workshops and also in special classes. Successful grads can visit the school and give presentations on successful networking. Probably faculty and staff at your school have networking skills to share. Networking is one of hundreds of ways to teach students and grads to be successful in the job search process.
Thanks, Susan
