Externship or no externship for all programs?!

I say yes!!!

I say yes, because not only is it practical for them to see what the actual job will be like but it also counts are experience and that looks great on their resume.

Lazaro,

We also believe that all programs need externship as part of the training. Students can gain on the job experience, learn about the workplace, and enjoy an extended job interview. Thanks, Susan

Dr. Susan Schulz

all programs need externship in order to establish the next steps in our students field of work

Lazaro,

Exterships are very important in our opinion. There needs to be externship policies and procedures for students, teachers, and on site supervisors. There needs to be ways to measure how everyone is doing.

Beatriz,

Externships are an important part of training. Externships need to be well thought out, organized, and measurable. Students need to have supervisors to talk to and be well prepared before starting.

Dr. Susan Schulz

I think is very important the externship for all the programs

externship is one of the best ways to show employers the abilities and knowledge acquired so I say yes

Genia,
Yes, the practical experience part of training does give students on the job experience and further tests their question - is this career for me. When to offer the externship is always an interesting question. We can argue early. We can argue later in the program when the student has the skills, confidence, and work ethic to benefit from the experience and also be seen as a job candidate. Perhaps there are other on the job experiences for early in training such as job shadowing, work place visits, and being mentored by someone who is working in the same field. Thanks, Susan

I agree. I think that externships play a vital role to the success of the student's ability to be successful in finding a job. It also helps the student to see if they are really suitable for this career for everything will become more of a reality for them. The skills and the information that they have been learning becomes real life experience and no longer just a dream that they have wanted to see happen. Therefore, I feel that the earlier that they start getting their feet wet in the field the better.
This will also help the placement service to get inside info on how to help students to be well prepared and can give better insight on how to individualize the services provided according to the needs of the students.

Kendra,
Yes, any kind of practice gives students on-the-job-training and helps boost confidence. We know that many grads get job offers from their externship sites. That is ideal. It takes working with the student and setting the employers' expectations. We think that most training can benefit from hands-on practice and on the job experience. Thanks, Susan

Dr. Susan Schulz

I agree....students are more marketable if it shows that they have hands-on experience in the field that they are seeking employment in. The externship helps display the student as a complete graduate of a specialized training program. In a lot of cases it helps the student get their foot through the door.

isaac,
We agree that every training program should have an externship or practical component. The reality is that many students have little if any resume-worthy experience. Practical experience gives them experience and confidence. Structured effectively they have the opportunity to be offered a job at the work site. Reminder that students must be super prepared before going on an externship, must be supervised, and the expectations of the workplace set appropriately. Thanks, Susan
