Yes this is a GREAT idea. I"ve tried this and I've learnt that students are more receptive and since most people are hands on and now relate more to what is seen than only what is heard or described in books, it becomes a great tool. It also gives the students more excitement to continue on with their learning.

Jessica,

This is always a great way to connect students with prospective employers and to help give students an idea of what's out there.

Best way would be to host an in house networking event where people in the business come to location and speak with students about all the possibilities within the industry. It creates a fun and informative atmosphere

Rocio,

This is so true! That initial excitement can wear down pretty quickly with rejections. I always recommend sending out weekly inspirational emails to students to keep them motivated and hopeful-including success stories of people who succeeded after a great deal of struggle.

I think all students are excited when they begin job searching... the key is to maintaining that motivation. I like the idea of the"treasure hunt" workshops for young student, this would be a fun way to excite them. But with adult learners I think the key is to get them focus and organized in order to reduce failure attempts. Also, picturing the ideal job, making a wish list and features of this job would give them the BIG PICTURE idea of where they are going.

But, again, I think the easy part is beginning.. the hard one is keeping them on track.

Veronica,

I like the idea of applying what the student has already learned; also, to suggest that even though they may not have worked yet in their chosen field, they bring all the learning and experience from their lives-which is usually more than they realize!

You may want to discuss with student the excitment of starting a new different career and applying everything he/she learned in school.

Greisy,

Yes, always seems to be a source of inspiration for the students. I also recommend bringing in graduates who have secured positions in the field if possible.

Hello:
My opinion is that bring succesfull people into the classroom to talk to the future professionals is a very good idea. In this way they can see themselves as professionals, and also they know, first hand ,what they need to become a professional

zulema,

This is so true..that's what makes networking so important.

Remind them that not all jobs that are available are advertised.

Nora,

Great idea! It really helps to see what it's really like out there.

Elizabeth Kemler

Nora,

This always seems to work well. Do you ever bring in professionals from the field to speak as well?

Elizabeth Kemler

Showing some of the opportunities the institution have to offered, sharing some of our grad. students success stories

A way to make them feel excited is sending in a students in field trips to business in their field, they get excited and keep them highly motivated

Correct that is what we do here, she bring graduate students to our classroom to speak about their succefull experiences, sharing the easiest ways to search for jobs, and giving to them some helpful tools to access the field of study.

Yanisdey,

This is great! I'm always recommending this to career services professionals-there's nothing better than hearing from people who are doing the work we want to do.

At the Institution that I work at which is in the Beauty Industry, some of the things I like to do is bring either successful business owners in the field or recent GRAD students to share their experience and motivate our students. I also hold Career Fair events, Employer's Tables with a wide variety of salon and spa owners and much more.

Carla,

What a great idea! This is the first time I've heard of this but it makes so much sense, and is great because you can use it over and over again.

Elizabeth Kemler

I'm not able to get the best guest speakers come during school hours, so I reached out to my contacts and asked them to let me record them answering questions about getting to know potential employers, interviewing skills they look for, how to be successful, etc. Getting the "powerful" people my students want to work for to to "speak to them", even to a camera, has proven successful for me. It's priceless information, recorded on video, and comes from someone else other than me or the instructors.
