External Touch Points & Social Media
As aforementioned within the module, many people utilize social media, not only to convey business insights and information, but also to keep in contact with friends and family, both distant and close. The social media network has been used to express one's personal feelings and lifestyle. In having this source of access of information into one's personal life, social media is an external touchpoint, in getting to know the personality traits of representatives for a specific institution and company. Even myself, I must be cognizant of the things I state on social media in order not to bring attention to my institution, and only push for positive reputation and image.
Gerry, Thank you for posting this in the forum! Do you feel all social media, such as LinkedIn, has as negative an impact?
Dr. Jean Norris
I detest Facebook. I feel it has many more negative than positive aspects, especially from a privacy standpoint. I do not, nor will I ever have a Facebook account. I do not participate in any regular form of social media. I am in some special interest forums. I think it is unfortunate that the business community seems to be attempting to force its employees to participate in social media to further their ends. I'm glad I am close to retirement so I can get out before I'm forced to make a choice between my career and my privacy.
Roy, Definitely. Thank you for sharing that perspective!
Dr. Jean Norris
Maybe, it depends on the subject I would think...Social Media can also be a big distraction as well.
Roy, All good points and something to consider. Would you agree that social media is another avenue to help engage students?
Dr. Jean Norris
Hmmm...let's stop a minute and see what is going on. I have seen people hide behind the anonymity of the Internet and Social Networks. I have seen students who were called on their laziness and misguided notion that all they had to do is show up in order to pass a class instead of doing any work, so they go on and vent their anger, and destroying somebody's reputation. I have seen it misused and more of a distraction.
Stop and think, if you have a social website to be used for personal interactions with your actual friends and families...but you have to stop and censure everything you say, or un-friend close friends because your afraid of his posts showing up on your site, then why bother...multiple times I have actually thought of stopping and deleting my accounts because of this.
Michele, Facebook is a great external touch point and used widely. Thank you for sharing!
