Keeping Retention

Having fun in class keeps the students interested. When a student(s) fall behind ask them questions on why they are not attenteding school, show concern, offer them help, and find out what their concerns are.

That has worked for also.Hands on labs are my priority because most of the students we have do not do well with academics.

... but there are also many ways an instructor can help with those many reasons. Being a successful instructor goes beyond stimulating interest. Interest is supported by skill.

There are many reasons a student might leave school, very few of which have anything to do with the instructor. We should of course do all we can to stimulate interest.

Sounds like a spirited classroom, Donald. What sort of things do you do to get their attention?

In the am class it is harder to keep the retention going. When walking into class greet the student with big loud goood mouring students. Then going into something that grabs them right away to keep them paying attention to you

I do believe that learning can be fun and has to be fun in order to keep the student interested. I even off the student a say in what ways help them to learn better. If the response is logical then I am all for it. I really believe that this is a good retention method.

Yes we have meetings at every midterm, and at these meetings we have guest speakers from colleges. The topics are education related such
as,handling difficult students, identifying students learning problems etc. These seminars
are very helpful.

Do you have others come into your class to share their experience?

I agree, when studens are having fun, they are awake and learning. Real life experiences (serious and funny) add meaning to the lesson,

Could you provide an example of relating a subject to things that students are already interested in, Fredrik?

I agree it is very important to keep the students interest. I have found that using real life experience and practical hands on lab, seem to be what the students most favor. It gives them confidence and shows them that it's really not that hard. This way they understand how this course will help them succeed in the field.

Keeping the student inerested is a top priority. Make the subjects interesting by relating them to things they are already inerested in.

Topics off limits happen from course to course. I expect it and usualy shut them down quickly by not allowing it in the class room.

If there is a problem the Education manager or student counselor takes care of it.

Are their any topics that are off limits? If so, is there someone on staff to whom the student is referred?
