Retention

Most students will respond positively if you treat them with non threatening respect. In otherwords, don't constantly harp on them when they are wrong, don't embarass them when they do the wrong thing. If they find the class enjoyable, they will try to see it through to the end.

It seems everyone is on the same page, but I would like to add that good and acheiveable expectations also keeps adult learners from leaving and finding a different avenues to take.It would appear that is a common thread with the way everyone treats their students and run their classes.

You mean treat them as adults? These folks are beginning a life of their own and while they think they have it under control (didn't we all?), they will need help and understanding more than belittlement as they stumble, crawl and spring up through these forming years.

I have found that on the very first day I will tell my class that the reason I find most students enjoy my class is because I treat them the same way I expect to be treated. Having that mutual respect is the way for the students to look up to the instructor and not to talk down to them but to talk to them. I tell them we are all here for the very same reason to help them succeed and to be the very best they can be.

The same can be said about workplace relationships.

How true is that statement! Treat a student as an adult and dont direspect them and they will do whatever you ask of them. As soon as you talk down the mood swings to a constant glare and lack of learning. If a student makes a mistake I have found it is better to try and build confidence for the next "go around" rather than to dwell on the individual mistake. If they didnt screw up once in awhile they wouldnt be human. If a "young adult" doesnt like what he/she is hearing they will tune it out and eventually just not come back to your class. If the class is kept interesting but under control it will be enjoyable and the retention rate will automatically go up!

add reward to there achievements in front of everyone will build there self asteme.
