stay in class

It is a constant struggle to keep students focused. It is very disconcerting when students ask many hours out do I have out … We know that means they getting ready leave class yet again

Do the students understand the relationship between billing and their wages? Do they feel that the company is taking advantage of them by billing so much more than they are paid?

How much does the course teach them about the business side of the dealership?

I get the same question all the time. I usually ask the student, if he was working at a large dealership and he had this many hours would he have been fired for lack of attendence? I tell them to look on our job board and look at the attendence requirements. I tell them it is usually 95% to 98%. I explain to them attendence usually has a higher priority than GPA.

i like that approach i will keep that in mind the next time this comes up.thanks david

One method I have used in the past is to show them how much money their employer loses when they are late, absent or leave early. For example: You have missed 3 hours of class this week, which means that you could possibly miss 12 hours per month, 12 months per year. This is a total of 144 hours. Your service rate is $100 an hour. You potentially cost your company $14,400 per year. What do you think your boss will say about a raise at your next review?

Interesting response, Alan. How do the students respond? Are they surprised by the question?

Did you have a general discussion about the incident? Did they know about the 2 tests before they decided to leave? How did you handle their sense of entitlement?

Are you seeing the students supporting each other more while they try to improve retention? Have you seen any negatives, like students berating their peers who have to legitimately miss class?

When they ask how many hours out, I ask why. I try to turn that into a discussion that makes them want to stay.

I will pull my student aside and have a one on one chat with him or her to find out what might be happing. They my have work problems or home life problems. If that is not the case I will try to relate this to something they enjoy or want to work for.It my just come down to preasur from friends out off school. i feel a pesonal chat can go a long way.

Our school is emplementing a policy to buy pizza for the class with the best retention. This is only the second course we have tried it in. The students get agitated when another student is out of class without an excuse. I hope we see good results

All you can do is encourage the student not to miss time. There are several ways to do this. One situation may require an example of a senario of what happens if you have an emergency and really need that time that you just used. Sometimes it just requires a little encouagement.

I agree students seem to want to use all of the time that they can get away with. On one day in class over half left with four hours left . The next day they were upset that they were resposible for the covered material ,three lectures and two test.Perhaps we are being to generous with the amount of time given.

if I notice this I try to ask them about their intrests that relate to the subjetct at hand or other subjects that revolve around the automotive world.

Unfortunately, that is a question that employers get all the time, too.
