a long year, a terrible economy

Retention is particularly challenging when it is a long course and personal financial challenges make a student question the wisdom and feasibility of persisting with the class. This is where a clear vision of the rewards is vital.

How do you reinforce that the skill they are learning is valued by employers?

I find reminding them they are in my lab to obtain a skill of learning that will remain with them always, seems to help them stay focused on their goal. This helps with retention.

I agree and have seen students have to leave to help keep the family afloat. Some have had financial aid problems as the rules become stricter.

I try to impress the value of having a college degree. The student will have the competitive edge and will likely garner a higher salary with a degree than without.

Does your placement department engage students throughout the course, showing them the value of completion?
