Retention
What is your responsibility for retention?
Have an open door policy for communicating with students is key for retention. The students need to feel comfortable enough with their teachers, so they can talk to them about their disatisfactions, disbeliefs, sharing their personal struggles with them. Many times, I come to realize that students drop out because of their personal issues, which make them less productive in the classroom. As a result, they get frustrated, angry, and easy to give up. All they need, in reality, is someone to listen to them, and/or give them some guidances. My responsibility as an instructor is to tackle students' issues as soon as they occur. I have to make myself approachable, willing to relate to their issues/personal struggles, giving to them any kind of guidelines, guidances, advises that may be appropriate to their situations. Most importantly, give them the safety net and confidentiality that they may be looking for place else, so they could become more expressive.
Does your school have a formal system to improve teaching skills? How do you reach that higher level?
It is our job, each and every person throughout every employer, for us to be educated at a higher level in order to instruct. It is our responsibility to make sure we are approachable and to always have an open ear to listen with.
I would like to share a quote I hear now and again from students that I've had "I wanna be just like Pino" thanks.
