Retention Percentages

Should traditional colleges versus career colleges have different retention criteria?

It can depend on the person themselfs. Having a percentage to be able to rate retention is a good thing.

This is an interesting question that has been debated across segments of higher education for years. Another variation of the question is whether community colleges should be judged differently than four year colleges.

Certainly the population served by community colleges is more similar to those served by career schools and the reasons offered for their lower completion rates are ones that are very familiar to the career sector.

I tend to agree with you, Martie, that everyone in the post secondary sector should be evaluated on their performance. Each institution has the responsibility to accept students who have the ability to benefit from their training and then to provide adequate support services to provide a reasonable assurance of success.

Hi Heather,

Absolutely not. Both are in the business of changing lives for the better. Why should the retention criteria be different from the actual goal? I believe that if students know that their education will improve their lives and they are supported in that belief, then retention percentages are just as important at every level of education.....traditional or career college level.Your thoughts?
