Retention

Get to know your students, so you can tell when something is bothering them. That way you can offer your assistance, by asking them what is it that you can do to help them get through the course.

Getting to know your student is very helpful, but it is also important to seperate empathy from sympathy because some student will abuse your flexibility.

I completely agree with you all. The more you know about a student, and the more comfortable they feel with you directly relates to how much they will share with you when problems do arise. Taking a little time to get to know your students is well worth it. You do not have to use much class time to accomplish this. Even speaking with your students when you pass them in the hallway helps.

i agree aswell.getting to know your students also lets them feel like an indavidual. another thing if you make the class fun while delivering the material student want to be there and are more open to you

I agree with your idea - when you know something about a student such as they are working 2 jobs, I often ask specifically how they are doing and are they being able to get enough sleep.
