New teaching strategies can help keep students interested

It's a new paradigm. Clever use of available technology, Patrick.

Spot on, Dorothy. For better or worse, they want to know why they have to know this. As annoying as this question can be, I sometimes wish my generation would have asked.

That's really interesting, Dennis. Does the software work with every type of phone? Even older non-smart phone versions? Ever have a student who didn't have a phone?

An intructor with indepth knowledge and a real committment to their profession and teaching are fundamental for instructor success.

I agree. I constantly try to add things to make class more interesting.

It is important to show the relevence of the topic to the student. I use real life stories and try to show not perfection but quality care

Though it (the necessity of addressing student learning styles) is has been debated in my neck of the woods, I try ascertain each student's learning style and ensure that my lessons include activities that address them. While lecturing addresses auditory learners, many times tactile learners feel left out during lectures. Thus, hands own activities are necessary to engage this type of learner.

I agree with your statement. I have started having the students have their phones out during lecture. My student population is veried and some do not understand english as needed. I have started them using googletranslator to help during their mock patient care. It does seem to help. Also, using real world examples and case studies give the students a "staff" aspect instead of a "student". I have had students that have stayed in the program despite obsticles that would have had them leave before.

I tell them real life situations about where they will apply the information I am presenting. Many times it helps them to feel like the material etc is pertinent and that is why it is important to know.

I recently found polltogo.com where you can put questions and have the students use their phones to submit answers. If you can't make them put them away and keep them from looking at them, lets try to use their phones constructively.

Sabrina, how do you develop new teaching strategies? Do you discuss this with your colleagues?

Juwana, do you share best practices with your colleagues? This is a great way to rejuvenate your practices and theirs.

I do believe that this is correct. if you come up with new ways to make the lesson more exciting and ingaging the students will look foward to coming to class.
