retention competing with self-destruction
Sometimes I find that my students have such a self-destructive attitude. They compete with each other and try to undermine each other. They have developed very poor skills when it comes to working as a team. They look for fault or reasons they can't succeed, rather than buckling down and making the most of the situation They don't realize that they will ultimately lose if they continue that behavior. How much is the instructor responsible for in these types of situations? I want my students to succeed. What can I do to help them succeed and realize their dreams?
David, how do the students feel about writing out their bad behavior? I'm surprised you don't get some strong resistance to this.
I know personaly I dig a little deeper with my students to figure out what the root of their self-destructive behavior is. Many times its family or fear. I address it and have them write out all their bad behavior and get rid of it.
Obviously there is a limit to the expectations of an instructor in changing this type of behavior, John. Do you have graduates come to your class to address this issue and share their story? Hearing the message from a new voice may be useful.
