Motvation

How much is motivation related to retention?

I find it hard sometimes to convince students that the school is there to help them through what might be going on in their lives outside of school

True motivation is intrinsic. Retention follows this formula.

I agree motivation does I think play a big role for the students because if you go day to day and never let a student know they he or she is doing a job or showing them different ways studying in their weak areas. ever now and then it wouldn't hurt to share a short story about what we a trainers (intstructions) have went through to get to where we are, to keep pushing and never give up.

Motivstion will help a lot when dealing with retention. It will not cure the issue because no matter how motivated we can get our students there will be some that have personal issues that can hender them. But no motivation at all can cause a dramatic drop in retention.

Terry, how do you measure motivation? This seems like something that is difficult to quantify.

There is a direct correlation between motivation and retention.

I agree, Elmira. How do you monitor an individual student's motivation and what do you do if you see it waning?

Motivation is a key factor in retention. The students desire to continue helps to seek help or solutions to obstacles. If there is no motivation then it makes it easier to quit.

Michelle, is there an attempt to help students identify their preferred learning style? Would results be shared with their instructors?

Motivation is everything to retention. If a student feels nobody is there, supporting them they will have a tendency not to ask for help. It is important to stress everyone has different learning styles and they may not know theirs yet. Making the material easy to relate to is key. Knowing you will hands on activities which are fun and not just all lecture is a great way to keep folks motivated too.

I think motivation is very important,If a student doesn't have motivation on their side it is ver unlikely that they will make it through their course.

Student motivation or faculty/staff motivation?

In either case motivation is essential to success, but its source is usually quite different. Without motivation (which can be encouraged by external sources, including faculty and staff as well as other students, family and friends), it is unlikely that a student will overcome the routine barriers that are encountered. Motivating faculty and staff, of course, is part of the purpose of this course.

Good question.
