Comittment

if you as an instructor are not commited to what your teaching your students will see it .

Telling the students about the good and the ugly of the industry prepares them for potential issues that may come up. Some of our students are already in the field and do have complaints on the industry. I believe that some of them find resolve when we discuss the issues and come up with solutions. Alot of these students are young and do not have the experience yet to handle any amount of stress. Thats one way where the "old dogs" can help the young pups.

I couldn't agree more. This career does take a commitment from the instructor to make not only the student and campus successful, but also the instructor.

The instructor needs to be committed not only to the task at hand (leading the class), but also, proficient at coaching the student through challenges they might encounter.

Have you brought employers into the classroom to explain their expectations and the standards used to evaluate employees?

Students need the instructor to have strong values and passion about the course or they will eat you alive. You as the instructor need to realise that you control what the students perceive, and need to stay passionate about what you are teaching...

i have also found this true.
i have worked 16+ huors d day for 3months and found my comittment and work habbits were directly affected.
students and staff saw it also.

I am absolutly comitted to the students in every way and try to pass on all the knowledge I have gained during 40 years in the industry. Most of the students in my classes have no experience performing any of the tasks when they enter the class and by the end of the phase become quite proficient in the class and lab. Yet some of the student evals rate my lab performance as fair.
An accurate evaluation of an instructor must include a physical observation in class and lab to truly judge your comittment

I agree with your staement you have to be committed 100% and all the time or the students will pick up on it. You have to be focussed and be positive all the time.

Committment on all parties are very important. A student needs to feel welcomed and an instructor, manager and director needs to welcome him/her

Yes. I hope that is why we do what we do. I would assume this is the reason why we are educators. If you don't care about what you do and look at it as "Just A Job" the students will notice that and come to a realization that you don't care about them and only see them as a number.

I agree to the comittment to the subject, anyone can read a power point, follow notes and teach (?) a subject. The students will sense if the teacher is comfortable with and knowledgeable about the subject. Get involved in the class, in the lab and lead by example. I put a lot into my classes, I am always with the students in the lab and encouraging them to do more, learn more, ask questions. I have told them the best technicians are the ones that are curious, because that leads them to answers that maybe no one else has been able to give them. I try to put as much real world experience into my classes as possible, heavy on the good, and not so heavy on the bad. But, I do let them know that it is not a perfect world (big suprise)and that there will be down sides. My evals have been good and the students seem to appreciate what I put out, so for now I will continue.

I have to completely agree with your statment about todays youth expecting to have things handed to them. I get decent evaluations but I too make them earn their grades fairly. I have to remind them that in our industry you have to be hungry and go after what you want because nothing will be handed to you.

I am committed to my work, and get bad evaluations because, I make them work for their grade. Those students expect it to be handed to them.

Actually, you may have an opportunity to promote your field. While this isn't a good time for automotive sales, it's reasonable to assume that the demand for service will increase because people are holding on to their cars/trucks. It's probably a point to make with students who may be losing confidence in their career choice.

Being an Automotive instructor, with the way the industry is at this point you have to be completly committed to the industry, and not let the students see any down side to it.

What you are teaching your students, you must be commited to!

Yes, they will. It will show up in course evaluations. Usually one can tell an instructors comittment by there work habits and attitude. It would also in the attitude of the class.

Exactly. If you show the passion of your instructional teaching naturally, then the students will most likely follow through with it.

But will the person responsible for evaluating the instructor's performance?
