One of my jobs here is to help identify troubled students. The student’s attendance rate is a great tool to use. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The student’s attendance rate is a sign of troubled student’s. When I pull students from class we have time to discuss what his/her issues are so we can find an action plan to aid the student to keep them in class. Everybody has to remember that our students also have day to day issues just like everyone else.

Does your institution have a reporting system that would make this flow of information possible? If not, what would it take to get started on developing a procedure?

I believe that having a staff person work with troubled students is invaluable. It often difficult for an instructor to provide counsel and still conduct an education in the classroom.

In other words, the instructor can identify the troubled students, have brief discussions with them and, if necessary, forward them to the staff person who is equipped and has the time to provide the proper counsel. Reports about these discussions, if not confidential, would be a big asset to the instructor for future issues.

Having Richard in this new position helps us instructors give students a cofidential way of dealing with their issues.He also is able to find options for the students that our student services dept. can not.He has also given us instructors new ways of helping the students.

Are the students pleased with this service when they talk with you? Do they appreciate the value of this service?

yes and it is working with the students helping them with some problems they have in comong to school or day to day life,cause i hear about it from them and in passing.

The current student count is about 620 give or take. I really haven't had time to look at percentages because we are still in a growth stage with this program.

What is your "case load"? How many students are you working with? Do you have repeat "offenders"?
