stress

some stress is normal, teach students how to deal with it and use it in a positive manor.

I couldn't agree more. Stress is a part of life and therefore for students to be as successful as possible, they need to learn to deal with it. But as well as teaching them to deal, they need to see that you have invested interest in what goes on in their lives.

Sress is excellent in determining if a student has the stamina to handle a serious situation. As a firearms instructor, I have my students do mulitple exercises or physical activities prior to them shooting at a stationary and moving targets. The student's experience enlightens part of the job's requirements that students must face at any time. Students have a false belief about their capabilities until the realization of a true life threatening situation (simulated) take place. I purposely put my students under great amount of stress to see who has the abilities to handle an emergency situation. Students also have the ability to evaluate who they would enter an encounter with and who is capable of thinking on their feet. Those who cannot handle stress should limit their participation in certain professions.

How do you do that? It's a distinction that students may have trouble making.

stress is good in some ways, but in an educational environment, it can be detrimental. I think its best to teach students to separate the type of stress associated to their new skills and industry, and the one thats personal and doesnt help them succeed

I tell my students that they are going into one of the most stressfull jobs out there, if they cant find a way to manage stress than they will fail. I try to help them to find the up side of most things and get them to focus the good and not focus on things that are out of their control.
