I learned alot...
I learned alot about myself in this module. But how do we get the student to open up to us before all of this happens. The student who falls in these catagories are not the ones who freely open up to us. I have several students who are in the catagory "too little to late" and it breaks my heart. Maybe I will find this answer later on?
We have implemented a mandatory six week student success program that every student completes before becoming a full time student. This program consists of several self discovery lessons such as how they deal with stress, what type of learner they are, how are their time management skills, etc. They also complete journals on their expectations. This way the instructor has a clearer picture to the student from the onset.
I made different approach.
Why? Because first, I put my ideas by written and I discover myself with a lot of blank spaces in my own understanding of this process.
Then I clarified my thoughts and latter on I made the same procedure with the students. Total different perspective, because now I can see a lot of things before happen and I'm in better position to help students
Please share the results, Duvall.
I like this idea I think i will try it. Thanks
I have the students write about themselves. After putting it on paper it is easier for the student to share.
Getting some students to open up isn't an easy task. There are those who feel that seeking help is a sign of weakness.
The use of journals is one way of getting students to share information that may be useful. The topics can't be too "touchy, feely", but you can ask students to tell you how they approached an assignment, what barriers they encountered, and they overcame them. You can ask them to describe a project where they had to work collaboratively.
Carefully crafting the journal assignments will allow you to get information about how the student is doing while sharpening their communication skills.
