stress

sometimes stress of the education can get to a student who is feelinf over whelmed. take the time to listen to the student just talking things out with someone helps

When I was still actively involved with a school, we used the stress barometer in Campus ToolKit to get feedback from our students. In order to assure participation, periodic completion of the assessment was a standing assignment for select classes. Feel free to contact me if you would like more information.

It never ceases to amaze me the stories of some of our students. Sometimes the stress is student-induced by poor planning, procrastination, or apathy about homework. A lot of times I learn the rest of the story: a chronic illness/disease, death of a loved one, a seriously ill child, but oftentimes that information comes late in the quarter, sometimes too late to do anything about it. If only we could know sooner rather than later what their stressors are, maybe we could help them stay in school.

The majority of my experiences with student's stress, is that it was self inflicted, usually from making bad choices in their personal lives. Just shug your shoulders and give a puzzled expression.

I think those are great solutions. Breathing and stretching are simple solution that relieve a lot of stress.

Being a nurse and a massage therapist, I see first-hand how emotional stress can affect the physical body, causing pain and the inability to concentrate. I show my A & P students simple ways to physically de-stress themselves (breathing, stretching, etc.). I feel that it opens a channel of caring between us and they can talk to me more openly about their problems.

Education is overwhelming. I teach at night and most of the students I have are older and have made a life changing decision to get an education. Unfortunately, that decision was made due to some outside stresses that the student may bring into the classroom each night. I do make it a point to ask my students ono-on-one why they are in my class. Once I know what motivates them I can help them deal with the stresses of the education process.
