When a student is stressed, we can help. We can start the dialog with a student, by simply saying to them, you don't seem like yourself today, is there something bothering you that I can help you with?
Melissa, how frequently do you have these kinds of conversations? Do you do anything like this with groups of students?
Vey true. We as faculty, can and most times need to open doors for discussions. Ask our students how they are doing. Remind them why the enrolled in school, talk to them about the end results. Keep encouraging them to see it though, no matter what. commitment and consistancy
James , what's your role in helping the student get and keep a vision of success? What techniques have worked for you?
Positive reinforcement is a powerfull tool. Many students who are struggeling with school have never been told how they matter. They need to get and keep a vision of success.
As you point out, Sean, recognizing a problem is just the start of the process. Positive results only happen when someone takes the next step to engage the student.
I agree with that. I find it pretty easy to tell when something is wrong my students just by their demeanor or the way that they take part in class. Often just asking them what the problem is will be enough to brake the ice.
