When a student fails a test or is behind in there labs now is the time to act. We need to make sure the student knows what they are missing in lab and make sure they know we have tutoring. When and were tutoring is available is very important. Same goes with attendance. Why did the student miss a day? Show concern about this problem and that you are willing to work with them.
The second thursday of class is an all day lab. That is the time i sit down with the students and talk about any concerns. I used to do it with the students who were struggling. Whether it be attendance, grades, or labs. What I found out is they all want to talk to me. So now I talk with all the students. Even the ones succeeding want positive reenforcement that they are doing well.
How correct! we have to be on our toes every day to recognize students with problems, and act on them as soon as possible.
I am the Medical Records Information Techonolgy Externship Co-Ordinator for our school so I always have a "free" period during my class schedule. I make it a point to let all my students know that they may come to my classroom during that period for extra help or to make up work. Our school is also open in the evenings until 10:00pm so I encourage the students to also try to come in the evenings if they have time thet need to make up hours.
That shows a good conection with the students. This is a fast moving pace and to stay on top of of the students day to day pays off both the instructor and the student.
The instructors provide the tutoring between classes.
