Intervention
There's times as an Insructor you can actually see the student failing in class that reflect the stess in these students. The Student may show a lack of interest in some cases. Some don't have self respect this definately can also make your job challenging.
I believe that we as educators we should reach out. Their are some students that need someone to guide them to find their sense of purpose and ultimately reflect how worthy they are.
I don't agree with this as I feel that helping students achieve self respect is just part of the job of being an educator. No matter how skilled of a educator you are, if the student hates themselves will they be willing to go out into the work force and be a shining example of the education you provided? To me, some of the instruction I am most proud of is when I was not able to teach someone something, but see them feel proud of what they learned and then use it to be proactive in coaching / teaching others. You'll never get those results when a student's self-worth is low.
i beleive self-respect should be taught at home but if we can help a student see something in a different light well that's ok.
Any one who doesn't have self respect is never going to succeed. They will always find an excuse not to. Is the person's enviorment to blame? Or is it us instructors? If it was that simple. No there are a lot of things that contribute to it. Anything that we do to improve their self respect is a bonus for them. Again it is not our primary job, just a little human kindness. But after all isn't it our job togive them the tools to succeed?
interesting subjects are important
Great Idea Todd, I will try this.
find a subject that interests the student that you dont know much about turn it around and learn something from them, you will be surprised what they know.
Is there anything instructors can do to build self respect in the students? Is this an appropriate objective for instructors?
