intervention

listen and help if you can... if you cant help find out who can

That's a great way to handle a situation. Finding someone who can help certainly shows your commitment to the student.

And what if they aren't interested in sharing their life story? They may be thinking "I don't have time for this background stuff. I need help now with this specific issue".

I find that it is important to find some common ground with a student before intervention. I like to ask him, or her, for their life story and then go from there.

I believe there needs to be some sort of follow up needed a lot of times you may have helped for that day. But a few days or weeks and there back to thinking the same thing. If we make a point to check in on them or have some one to check on them would be the best idea.

I totally agree. Whenever students address problems to me. I make sure to follow-up with everything on a daily basis, and if it was resolved I still make sure they are satisfied with the outcome and make them aware to contact me or anyone else I referred them to for further or continual assistance if they have additional concerns or needs

I make it a point to follow up on issues that a student may have to see if if the issue has been resolved or if the issue needs more attention. While I can not "fix", I can give opinion and direction to best assist the students needs.

If possible, the next time you see the student, or if you have a quick minute, stop by and see if their problem was resolved. Show them you care, more than just trying to pawn them off on another department for help. This increases student moral.

i agree on helping the best you can and send them in the right direction assuring them they will be taken care of.

yes help the best you can, and if not send them in the right dicrition.

At my school intervention however it is started follows through a system that can start with an education mamager and progress through student services. Instructors are always looking for signs of stress and if deemed necessary the above parties are contacted.
