INTERVENTION
To heip a student we need to know what is going on with the student talking to them you can find out what the problem is then you can see what you need to do to help them.
Great advise, I listen to what my students are telling me. Usually they just need to vent so I always lend a helping hand if possible. Some of my students have family problems. they know that I am always here to listen to them. When they leave they are feeling much better.
Callie, more validation of the power of instructors. You have the ability to change lives.
It's inspiring to see how even the slightest interest in a student's progress encourages them to open up about the inner-workings of the issue at hand. More often then not, even they are surprised by their willingness to discuss the heart of the issue.
Jon, what do you do to build a level of trust with your students? Do you find that all students respond similarly to your efforts?
I agree. Instructors need to be engaged and build a level of trust with each student. At this point it's much easier to identify potential issues they may be having.
Building a bond with the students promotes them feeling confident in expressing their concerns.
It takes patience when helping students. You want to show them that you have time to listen and you want to show them you care. Many students have many different problems, unfortunately I can't always help to solve them but I can give them advice to help them move on. I can help show them to move in the right direction. I find that the majority of students feel more comfortable talking to me about their problems then their own friends or family. I tell them I am not here to judge but to listen and help.
Listening to the students can teach us what is important to them. Responding to their needs shows that you understand, showing students that their is always several solutions to problems is also teaching. Intervention is about allowing students to vent and get their frustration out which gets to the real problem.
Once you have found the problem, solutions are easier to find. Ther is no one answer for every problem.
I agree. If you dont know what the is bothering the student, then you dont know how to help them.
