Web-based retention intervention system

The course mentions that some schools are using "web-based retention intervention system that provides students with a confidential, non-confrontational, non-judgmental way to contact school personnel". My school does not do this and I'd like to know if anyone here has experience with this technique and what the results are?

We have a way to do this at our school and yes I do believe it helps. I know the student never likse to be called out in front of others and sometimes ashamed to ask for help in front of others so this opens the door for discussion.

For more information about one system, visit www.campustoolkit.com. You can see a list of colleges that have used the system and comments from some of them.

Betina, one of the advantages of programs like Campus ToolKit is the concentration of information that is pass word protected but can be shared with appropriate colleagues while working with a student. Having access to student profile information can also be very useful when counseling the student.

Web-based tools can be very effective, but as pointed out, the person(s) monitoring the system must be responsive on a timely basis. One advantage of a web-based system is 24/7 access, but this can also be a major problem if not properly monitored. Students seem to have a different internal clock as well as a selective sense of urgency. While they may realize that no one is on duty at 3 am, they do expect someone to contact them the next business day.

I have not had experience with a web-based, but I have experienced a "student hotline" that was intended to help students with any non-academic issues. Many of the students reported that they felt they did not get the assistance they needed, and that there was no connection with the phone reps. It is more effective to build personal relationships with our students and let them know we do care about them.

I too am curious about this technique. Presently, I do contact students by email, if I am unable to reach them by phone. Further, I create notes in Campus Vue concerning actions that I took and student progress. However, this pales in comparison to what was described in the RT101 course.

I have not personally had any experience with this web based retention but it sounds like a good Idea
