Improved retention through outside activites

One of the biggest challenges I face as a student council faculty advisor is getting help with outside events from the faculty. It is rare that someone will volunteer to help with an event, any ideas?

I take my student to field trip and also show them movie and bring chef from the ouside to talk to them

Community service has been gaining in popularity in recent years - largely for the reasons you cite, Lori. It is an excellent way to enhance the reputation of the school while imparting valuable lessons to the students as well as helping them network.

What sort of projects do you get involved with?

I have found that getting students involved in outside charity events that gain them high visibility with industry leaders has drastically improved their rate of engagement wit in school. This covers many opportunities for both the school and the student – the school is represented well for giving back to the community, it is industry driven thus exposes the students to that aspect of the industry, the student gets to network with industry professionals and the most important – that all of us leave with a sense of giving/accomplishment that we gave of ourselves for those that can or may not be able to. Sell on those points and your volunteerism rates should improve.

What sort of events, Kathi? Are these curriculum related or social? Getting help for social events that don't interest staff and faculty can be very difficult and may require administrative encouragement.

However, if you are planning an event that relates to a field of interest or a cause near to the heart of staff/faculty, you may be able to engage their support.

Can you be seen in a supportive role rather than primary role for these events?
