Coping Skills

Do you have coping skills training at your school?

We don't have this as and individual unit but convinced our mentors (Teacher) did teach about this throughout the program.

Money management is covered including credit card usage, obtaining credit scores, investment strategies, and personal budget development. Our students are exposed to many of these subjects in their Economics class later in their program. We have found that reinforcement is an excellent idea.

Sounds like a valuable course, particularly for the younger students. Do you cover money management? Budgeting and financial decision making are often weak spots for students.

One of the first classes each and every student must complete is entitled "Career Success Seminar". The first topic addresses student stress and how to deal with it. The course goes on to address proper study skills, physical and mental well being including proper nutrition and exercise programs, etc. This class is fairly new for our school and we are still in the tweaking stage but so far, it has proven useful for the students.

Most of the time they step up to the plate and talk to me. We develope a strategy and they check in with me periodically. If they fail to do so.. I hunt them down and touch base with them. If its something that is out of my realm then I look for help.

How do your students respond to your directive about them telling you what it's going to take? Do they know the answer?

We have many different ways to handle coping with different barriers. Some might be language, technique and style. I have always tried to be one on one with the student and bluntly stating, "You tell me what it's going to take for you to understand this problem before you. And how can we resolve it?"
