Academic Success

I have found that finding out early in the block each student’s ability and potential to successfully complete the class is crucial to retention efforts. Students who are not sure of themselves and lack the prerequisite skills needed for success must be coached and encouraged on a daily basis. With this help, support and commitment students begin to feel confident in themselves and their achievements.

David, what are some of your preferred methods of offering positive feedback?

I have found in my teachings students build on the instructors knowledge and positive feed backs.By doing so you tend to get better attendence and higher grades.

I would suggest that effective coaching is defined by each set of circumstances. Some cases will require one on one work while others can be turned into an event by involving a group of like challenged people. [misery loves company]

Response rates and participation in Forums like these are good indications of a students confidence and progress. It is discouraging to see some participants do the minimum and disengage as soon as they can. I'm sure you experience the same thing with students who do the minimum and hope to get credit for their participation.

I absolutely agree. Does the coaching you mention need to be one on one for those students or can it be in the form of small mentoring groups? How do you measure when a student is gaining that confidence to be successful in an on-line learning format?
