reinforce the class
I like to talk about personal experiences that relate to what they are going to learn in the course. To reinforce the class and that is real important for them to know and understand.
I agree! Showing the students what you have done with what they are going into draws them in for participation later. Being human and showing them you show them it's OK for mistakes. Being excited about the material they will be learning, opens them up to be receptive more.
With about 40 yrs experience I find it easy to relate personal experience to classes.
Even thought the detailed experience/expectations change, the general expectations of students remains relatively constant
