Maintaining the students interest is crucial, finding innovative ways to translate the cirriculum into an upscaled an interest "new topic" is my goal.
Good point. Lending a ear to hear the problem without getting involved can sometimes be all the student needed. After listening carefully, helping the student locate futher assistance is also a good path.
All of that is true , But be carefull not to cross the line of being too involved, or you might find yourself being drawn into the problem. You have to keep a distance with their personal life.

Excellent point. It is often something completely unrelated to class that causes the issue. Good for you!

When I have student who is not engaged and a acts like they don't won't be here I have a talk with them to find out where the problem is. I find that a lot of the time it is something other class and work with them to make sure they get everything from the class.
