Orientation

First impressions are extremely important to student expectations. A realistic and concise review of any program is important.

I agree first impression is very important. from there is where it all starts with a new student and we must be able to hold that positivity in them til the end.

Rory--

Very true! Do you use any special exercises or tactics to gain understanding and trust?

Susan

Myrna--

As you point out, it is extremely important that students have a realistic expectation. This goes a long way toward good retention.

Susan

I also think that first impressions are critical. At orientation the students are able to get a glimpse of the organization and they are able to see a lot of different things at that point in time. They are able to gain understanding and a sense of trust. Add that particular point in time you have an opportunity to meet and beat their expectations.

It is extremely important to be realistic in the orientation process, so the students dont come with false expectations.

Jason--

There is always a fine line between too much and too little information. You can certainly over-do it! Sounds like you have a great balance.

Susan

in my classes that if you talk about yourself to much it makes the students feel like your self centered. I make it a point to only mention a few things about me and then the students ask questions about my past and it fills in the gaps. It also helps them to understand im approchable and easy to get along with. It helps with keeping them on the right path.

a smile goes along way.

We provide students with tips for sucess and let them know that our faculty and staff are there for them during departmental breakout sessions during the orientation. Students also get a chance to meet other students going through the same experiences so they know they are not alone.

yes charles couts i agree showing a smile and show that you care is important

Robert--

I agree...but what a challenge this is for the instructors! If everyone came to class prepared to present the material in a way that encourages understanding and excitement about the subject that is the ideal situation--and takes a great deal of preparation and planning on the part of the facutly.

Susan

I believe the classroom has to have a certain "Wow" factor on the first day, then you have to maintain the rest of the course at that level.

I agree. I also try to provide an environment where students can share with each other their experience and what their goals are. I have found this creates comfort and a bond between students.

I feel am atmosphere of excitment will help the students motivation level and welcoming them as soon as the enter the classroom will demonstrate to them you make a habbit of being in the classroom before class begins to address any needs they may have.
